No Court Needed: Man's Bold Move to End Marriage the Traditional Way
In an unexpected turn of events, Nwadoro December has taken to social media to announce the dissolution of his marriage, providing a detailed explanation of his decision to not pursue legal avenues for the separation. December expressed his regret over marrying into a family from NGWA, Abia State, and clarified his stance on the dissolution process.
In his candid post, December wrote, "Do I care? I don't. Do I regret? I don't. Life is irreplaceable, so I choose to quit, walk away to stay alive." His words reflect a strong resolve to prioritize his well-being over societal expectations.
December acknowledged that the decision to marry from such a family was a mistake, emphasizing that he wasted his resources in the process. He stated firmly, "I owe no one any explanation or details despite the accusations, abuses, and lies on me. My decision is supreme and must be respected. Marriage is not by compulsion or imposition."
Highlighting the traditional aspects of his marriage, December explained that a customary law marriage can be dissolved without judicial intervention. He pointed out that since his marriage was not conducted through a court or church, it does not require formal legal dissolution. "A customary law (traditional) marriage can be dissolved without any judicial intervention or pronouncement, which means that the parties can end the marriage on their own without instituting any action in court for an order of dissolution of the marriage," he elaborated.
Regarding the return of the bride price, December mentioned that it can be returned at any time, typically when his former wife remarries. He noted, "I don't need to go to her village for it, that's my culture."
Despite the dissolution, December extended his best wishes to his former wife, hoping she finds happiness with another partner. "I wish her well in all spheres of life as she finds another man suitable for her," he wrote.
This announcement has sparked conversations about the flexibility and cultural nuances of traditional marriages in Nigeria. December's decision underscores the autonomy and personal choice involved in customary law marriages, where individuals can navigate their paths without the formalities imposed by modern legal systems.
Nwadoro December’s story serves as a reminder that cultural practices still play a significant role in personal decisions and that individuals can exercise their rights within the framework of their traditions. His resolute stance on handling his marital affairs through traditional means offers an alternative perspective on marriage dissolution in contemporary society.
