Otto Addo Names 26-Man Squad for World Cup Qualifiers: Andre Ayew Absent from Black Stars Lineup
Accra, Ghana - May 28, 2024
In a surprising move, Ghana’s head coach Otto Addo has announced his 26-man squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic, with notable absences including seasoned captain Andre Ayew.
The squad, revealed earlier today, highlights a mix of experienced players and emerging talents, aiming to secure crucial victories in the qualifiers. However, the exclusion of Andre Ayew, one of Ghana's most prominent football figures, has sparked widespread discussion among fans and analysts alike.
Addo's decision to omit the 34-year-old Ayew, who has been a cornerstone of the Black Stars for over a decade, suggests a strategic shift as Ghana looks to build a team for the future. Ayew’s absence marks a significant moment, as the forward has been instrumental in numerous campaigns, contributing both leadership and crucial goals.
"Andre has been a great servant to the national team," Addo stated during the press conference. "But we have decided to give opportunities to other players who have shown great potential and form. This is about building a team that can not only compete now but also grow together for future challenges."
Among those called up are Thomas Partey of Arsenal, who will captain the team, Mohammed Kudus of Ajax, and promising young talent Kamaldeen Sulemana from Southampton. The squad also sees the return of Daniel Amartey and Jordan Ayew, providing a blend of experience and youthful energy.
The Black Stars are set to face Mali on June 10th, followed by a match against the Central African Republic on June 15th. Both fixtures are critical as Ghana seeks to maintain its strong position in the qualifiers and secure a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The complete squad is as follows:
Goalkeepers:
Richard Ofori (Orlando Pirates)
Lawrence Ati-Zigi (St. Gallen)
Abdul Manaf Nurudeen (Eupen)
Defenders:
4. Daniel Amartey (Leicester City)
5. Gideon Mensah (Auxerre)
