BREAKING NEWS: The military in Burkina Faso says it has seized power in a coup. The announcement was made on state television by an army officer, who said both the government and parliament had been dissolved.

The Patriotic Movement for Safeguarding and Restoration, according to Capt. Sidsore Kaber Ouedraogo, "has decided to assume its obligations before history," citing the growing security situation and the president's incapacity to manage the problem. The military coup is the third in West Africa in the last 18 months, causing chaos in some of the countries most hard-hit by Islamic extremist attacks.
